Summer holiday, by our makers

Summer Holiday

Every now and then, you need a break by doing things at your own pace. Going on a holiday is a good exercise in enjoying yourself and seeing the world, your activities, work, etc. from another angle. Summer is almost over. Time to look back at how our makers spent their summer period!

We asked them 3 questions:

  • ‘How did you spend your holidays?’
  • ‘What book did you read during the previous months?’
  • ‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

I was wondering whether a man who can look back on 20 years of ongoing illustrating, takes some time off so once in a while. And more specifically during Summer time like most people do, to enjoy the sun and some me-time. But it seems that, in case of Carll Cneut, the answer is ‘no’… Time for his Summer throwback!

You can discover and enjoy the beauty of his 1st reproduction ever of one of his original paintings (De blauwe vogel) at LECHAPERON by clicking here. In case you want to know more about Carll or his famous technique, read his full portrait.

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Carll : “There wasn’t any holiday for me this year to be honest. There was and still is too much going on to sit back and relax. I worked on the Polish version of ‘De gouden kooi’, I had to prepare everything for the exhibition of my works at the big literature festival in Berlin in September. I also participated in some workshops and discussions during the festival. I worked on a new book that will be released October 18th (if everything is going as planned). Oh, and there was also the yearly course I give during summer in Italy. On the picture, you can see me standing at the pelgrimage site in San Loreto (Italy). It was my only day off during this summer… :-).

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Carll : “Hm, I didn’t read a book during summer, but one of my all time favourite books ever is ‘Quincunx, de erfenis van John Huffam’ by Charles Palliser.”

What is your favourite summer drink?’

Carll: “That would be an Aperol Spritz :-)”

A couple of months ago, Sophie Doore from the label Cover & Couch closed the door of the bustling city of Antwerp and moved to the beautiful nature of Portugal for a couple of weeks. Pure quality time while enjoying family, nature and the surrounding beauty. Time for her Summer Throwback series!

Sophie designed the beautiful PYLA cushion for LECHAPERON, that reflects her signature by means of the coloured graphic pattern. Its Sophie’s mission to prick the perception of dusty workspaces, dull fabrics and boring techniques. When she tells about her profession, you learn what a beautiful craft upholstery is really all about. Read the full portrait here.

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Sophie : “Before the holidays, it was a very busy period in the atelier and I knew that it was going to be that way when we returned. Neverthless, I managed to switch off the work modus and I was looking forward to spending some time with the family. We traveled to Portugal where we stayed at 3 different places. It was he perfect combination of culture, nature and enjoying family time with the 3 kids. One of the three places we stayed, was kind of like going ‘back to basics’, but we love(d) being there.”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Sophie : “I read a lot of books this summer : ‘Jean Prouvé par lui-même’ by Jean Prouvé, ‘Alles over Tristan’ by Tommy Wieringa, ‘Niemand is ooit verloren’ by Catherine Lacey, ‘Lichtjaren’ by James Salter, ‘De correcties’ by Jonathan Franzen.”

What is your favourite summer drink?’

Sophie : “The white wine we drank in Portugal and that we had to keep cool in the river :-)”

Lore Langendries doesn’t necessarily link the summer period to ‘slowing time’. On the contrary. She used all the time she had to prepare some activities that were planned in the months of September and October of this year. An insight in the busy agenda of this great artistic maker via our Summer Throwback series!

Together with LECHAPERON, Lore launched the 1 year HOLSTEIN project in February 2016. Discover the complete HOLSTEIN work at LECHAPERON and find out more about Lore while reading her portrait.

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Lore : “I used the summer period to prepare some activities in the months of September and October : there was the launch of a new work for Gallery Ra in Amsterdam, from Amsterdam I traveled to Helsinki where I was invited by Design Vlaanderen to represent Flanders, a part of my work will be shown at the ‘hairy symposium’ in Denmark where I also have to give a lecture in October and in between all of this there was also the preparation of my tablecloth in collaboration with Verilin, the ongoing 1 year HOLSTEIN-project in collaboration with LECHAPERON and the monitoring of an internship at my studio… :-)! It all came together, so there wasn’t a lot time left for some me-time this year. The photo was taken in Helsinki during a walk in town. I saw something shiny on the street, it wasn’t my intention to take a picture of it but eventually I liked this pleasant image :-).”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Lore : ” ‘I managed to read ‘Vele hemels boven de zevende’ by Griet op de Beeck”

What is your favourite summer drink?’

Lore : “A glass of rosé :-)!

Sometimes we only see one part of a person, but we often forget about the other side of him or her. Besides being a designer or an artist, there is also another part that we don’t know about. In case of Hanne Beutels, designer of handbags, this means being a mom and spending some time with her family. Although fall has entered, I gladly share Hanne’s Summer Throwback series with you! Discover more about Hanne Beutels’ design at LECHAPERON and read her full portrait to know more about this ‘green girl’.

Hanne : “We didn’t had much of a holiday this year, but we managed to take some days off this summer. We spent some days at the beach in Oostende (Belgium) with the kids. The picture was taken there :-).”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Hanne : “Ah, thanks to my husband, I read the Essais of Michel de Montaigne this summer. And I also read a practical book that I received, called ‘The life-changing magic of tidying’ by Marie Kondo, a Japanese guru-cleanup :-)”

What is your favourite summer drink?’

Hanne : “A cold beer please!”

Sven Unik

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Sven : “We had a fantastic holiday : in July, we stayed two weeks in France (the ‘Vendée’) for the fifth time in a row and it probably won’t be the last time :-). It’s a nice area, not too far and the kids already made some friends over the years, so it’s always a happy reunion. You can see me at rest during this holiday… In August, we visited Norway (we first did Copenhagen and afterwards the Norwegian fjords). This trip was exceptional to us and a great experience. The landscape was wonderful, the kids enjoyed it. It was also a really intense family experience as we were constantly together.”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Sven : “Hmm. It’s been years since I read a book…

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Sven : “I usually like to drink a gin, but this summer in Norway, I drank Aperol Spritz. I think I will always   associate this drink with our trip.”

In daily life, ‘Comme les loups’ creates the most beautiful bowties, but during summer, they also took some time off to recharge the batteries! Comme les Loups will be back at LECHAPERON at the end of this year with a new limited collection of bowties, but in the meantime, enjoy reading their summer throwback!

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Isabel : ” We didn’t travel far this year, but with the presence of the sun during a couple of days and a weekend in the Alps (Aosta Valley in Italy), we nevertheless had a small break. After have been two days in the beautiful landscape of the mountains in the Aosta Valley, our batteries were fully recharged again :-)! On the picture, you can see mee standing at a summer bar in Antwerp (Boccadera).”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Isabel : “Unfortunately, I haven’t read a book recently, but while working in my studio, I immersed myself in a number of podcasts, including ‘Serial’ . This American podcast analyzes the research that was conducted in the ’90s to the murder of a 16 – year-old girl (10 episodes of 30min).”

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Isabel : “Basil Fawlty. It’s a cocktail with gin and basil. (if you’re curious to see how it’s made : click http://www.njam.tv/recepten/basil-fawlty).”

Our fourth ‘maker’ in our summer series, is the lovely Margot Thyssen. She designed the exclusive limited edition series cup & saucer for LECHAPERON.

Margot Thyssen

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Margot : “I didn’t have a real holiday this year : I spent some time in Changchun – China as an artist and one of the special moments was an afternoon with two other ceramists : 30 children, age 10, had the opportunity to to become acquainted with clay for the very first time. That’s what you also see on the picture.

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Margot : “I read the ‘De witte weg’ by Edmund De Waal”.

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Niyona

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Jonathan : “This year, we stayed at home to (finally!) do some maintenance work at our home. But we also combined our stay at home with a 4-days citytrip to Paris. On the picture, you can see Nina and our boy James in the garden of the Tuileries Palace. I am the one standing behind the camera :-). It was 32 degrees that day in Paris!”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Jonathan : “ ‘Steve Jobs biography’ and ‘The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products’ by Johny Ive”

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Jonathan : “A classic one : Mojito, supplemented with extra blueberries to obtain that extra flavour.”

The second ‘maker’ in our summer series, is a duo Nathan & Tineke from the label ONTWERPDUO. They designed the limited edition series of the minimalistic black/blue shelf mirror for LECHAPERON.

Ontwerpduo

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Tineke : “We always try to combine work with private travel. This means that we don’t have a typical ‘holiday’. No sun, sea and beach for us. This year we went to Utah (USA) (see picture : taken @ Monument Valley), where we were invited to give guest lectures at the university in Provo during three days. And we took our kids with us. We enjoyed the absurdly beautiful nature overthere! And now we just returned from a short visit to the Czech Republic, where we visited glass factories that produce our new collection, and so we also stayed several days in Prague, again with our children. They are used being there. They had a chance to blow some glass bubbles themselves in the glass factory. How beautiful is that!?”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Tineke : “Instead of reading, we ‘listen’ very often to recorded books. During a long trip for example. The last one was “Sway : The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behaviour” by Rom & Ori Brafman. It is a beautifully defined literary nonfiction book about why we make irrational decisions.”

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Tineke : “That depends on the situation (where are you, and how hot is it?), but in general, a glass of water still is the best!”

The first maker of our summer series is ELISABETH LEENKNEGT from the label ELISA-LEE. She designed the stunning limited edition series of moOn earrings for LECHAPERON.

Elisabeth Leenknegt

‘How did you spend your holidays?’

Elisabeth : “This year, we traveled with our motorhome to La Douce.”

‘What book did you read during the previous months?’

Elisabeth : “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his years of Pilgrimage” and “The men without women” (= a collection of love stories) by Murakami. The moon and its symbolism are very important in all the books of Murakami. The Japanese mystique is very inspiring to me. Murakami’s moons also were a source of inspiration for the moOn earrings I designed for LECHAPERON.

‘What is your favourite summer drink?’

Elisabeth : “Lemon water with mint and possibly a touch of elderflower syrup!”
